Bukhara: A Labyrinth from the Tales of "1001 Nights"

If Samarkand impresses with scale, Bukhara captivates with atmosphere. It is the most intact medieval city in Central Asia. You don’t need to look for sights here — you just live inside them. Narrow streets, clay walls, the coolness of ancient trading domes… It feels like Khoja Nasreddin is about to ride out from around the corner on his donkey.

For centuries, Bukhara was the center of the Islamic world and science (the name itself translates as “Abode of Knowledge”). The great physician Avicenna lived here, and Sufis preached here. The city is so densely built with madrasahs and mosques that it is called “Holy Bukhara”. But for all its holiness, it is a very lively and trading city — bazaars here bustle just as they did 500 years ago.

The main symbol of the city is the Kalyan Minaret, the “Tower of Death”. 46 meters of perfect brickwork. Legend has it that even Genghis Khan, who destroyed half the world, did not dare to touch it. Raising his head to look at the top, he dropped his helmet and said: “I have never bowed to anyone, but this tower forced me to do it.” And after the walk, you simply must sit by Lyabi-Hauz — an ancient pond where people drink tea under centuries-old mulberry trees and rest from the heat.

“In all the world, light descends from the heavens, and only in Bukhara does it rise from the earth.”
