Khiva is not just a city; it is history’s largest and most intact “sandbox.” The inner city, Ichan-Kala, is ringed by powerful clay walls. As soon as you pass through the gates, you fall out of the 21st century. Everything here is so authentic that it feels like a movie set. But this is not a prop: real people live in these ancient houses, baking bread in tandoors and weaving silk carpets, just like thousands of years ago.
This is the harsh edge of the Kyzylkum Desert. For centuries, Khiva was the last bastion of civilization before the terrifying crossing of the sands for Silk Road caravans. Slaves, gold, and spices were traded here. This brutal history is still felt in the powerful architecture and the labyrinth of streets designed to confuse the enemy (and the tourist).
Khiva’s calling card is Kalta-Minor. It is that very “fat” unfinished minaret, completely covered in turquoise tiles. It was meant to be the tallest in the world, but… history decided otherwise, leaving us a unique masterpiece. And then there is the Juma Mosque, which has no walls but 213 wooden columns, and not a single one repeats another’s pattern. The oldest column is over 1000 years old!

Khiva is far, but the road is worth it. Especially in the evening, when the heat subsides, and the setting sun paints the clay walls a deep red. To climb the fortress wall, gaze at the endless desert, and realize that you are at the edge of the world — this feeling cannot be bought, it can only be lived.
