Samarkand is a contemporary of Rome and Babylon, a city about which poets composed legends and conquerors dreamed. It was not just the capital of Amir Timur’s empire, but the true “Navel of the Earth” of its time. Caravans of the Great Silk Road flocked here, carrying silk from China and spices from India. Here, science intertwined with the magic of Eastern architecture, creating a unique code that remains unsolved to this day.
Walking through its streets, you physically feel the breath of centuries. It is a city of turquoise domes that merge with the sky. Unlike many ancient cities that have turned into ruins, Samarkand lives, breathes, and continues to amaze everyone who steps on its land with its grandeur.
The heart of the city is the famous Registan Square. This is that very postcard view recognized all over the world. Three grandiose madrasahs, adorned with gold and azure, stand like guardians of time. But Samarkand is not just Registan. It is the mystical necropolis of Shakhi-Zinda, where stairs lead to infinity, and the giant Bibi-Khanym Mosque, built in honor of Timur’s beloved wife. Here, every brick is soaked in the history of love, power, and faith.
