Tashkent is a phoenix city. After the 1966 earthquake, it was rebuilt, turning into a unique mix of eras. Here, wide avenues are drowning in greenery, and around the corner of a modern high-rise, a cozy courtyard with a grapevine and a tapchan may hide. It is a city of contrasts: in the morning you drink coffee in a trendy coffee shop, and at lunch, you eat samsa from a tandoor at the old bazaar.
This is the only city in Central Asia with a metro, and it is not just transport, but a real underground gallery. Each station is a work of art with marble, chandeliers, and mosaics. Tashkent does not press; it embraces with its greenery and calm. It is the perfect start for immersing yourself in culture before traveling to ancient cities.
The heart of the old city is Chorsu Bazaar. A huge turquoise dome covers thousands of stalls. This is a gastronomic paradise: mountains of spices, hot flatbreads, dried fruits, and the famous “glutton rows” where shashlik is grilled and naryn is prepared. And if you want to see the real scale, head to the Plov Center, where tons of the country’s main dish are cooked in giant cauldrons (“like jacuzzis”).
